Product Description

Galacto Oligosaccharides (GOS) - Product Uses and Usage Instructions

1. Product Overview

Galacto Oligosaccharides (GOS) are a group of non-digestible oligosaccharides composed of galactosyl residues linked to a terminal glucose by β-glycosidic bonds, typically with a degree of polymerization (DP) ranging from 2 to 8. As a natural prebiotic dietary fiber, GOS is naturally present in human milk, legumes, and certain root vegetables, and is commercially produced by enzymatic transgalactosylation of lactose using β-galactosidase enzymes. It is widely recognized for its safety and beneficial physiological effects, with various applications in food, health supplements, and other fields.

2. Product Uses

2.1 Food and Beverage Industry

  • Infant Nutrition Products: As a biomimetic of human milk oligosaccharides, GOS is widely added to infant formulas and baby juices to simulate the nutritional structure of breast milk, promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria in infants, and support the development of their intestinal barrier and immune system. The addition amount is strictly controlled, usually 0.2 – 0.8 g per 100 ml in formula blends, and no more than 64.5 g/kg in milk-based infant formulas.

  • Dairy Products: It is used in yogurt, milk drinks, cheese, processed cheese, butter, and spreads. Adding GOS to yogurt can shorten the fermentation cycle, increase the number of lactic acid bacteria, and alleviate lactose intolerance issues; in ice cream, it can prevent lactose crystallization and extend the shelf life; in cheese and butter, it can improve product texture and nutritional value.

  • Beverages: Incorporated into fruit drinks, sports drinks, and lactobacillus beverages. It serves as a low-calorie, low-cariogenic sweetener alternative, while providing prebiotic benefits to enhance the functional value of beverages.

  • Bakery and Confectionery: Added to bread, cakes, cookies, chewing gum, chocolate, and jelly. It can replace part of the fat to improve taste and texture, increase dietary fiber content, and reduce the cariogenicity of products, meeting consumers' demand for healthy snacks.

2.2 Health Supplements

GOS is used as a core prebiotic ingredient in dietary supplements, available in powder, capsule, or tablet form. It is mainly used to regulate intestinal flora balance, promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, inhibit the growth of harmful pathogens, improve stool consistency, and relieve constipation. It can also be compounded with probiotics (forming synbiotics) to enhance the colonization effect of probiotics in the intestine, with common ratios of 2 – 5 g GOS per 1 – 10 billion CFU of probiotics. Additionally, it helps improve the absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, supporting bone health.

2.3 Other Fields

  • Special Medical Purpose Foods: Used in products for people with irritable bowel syndrome, post-operative recovery, and other conditions, as a nutritional fortifier to assist in regulating intestinal function and promoting physical recovery.

  • Animal Nutrition: Added to animal feed to improve the intestinal health of livestock and poultry, enhance immunity, and promote growth performance.

  • Daily Chemical Industry: Incorporated into certain daily chemical products to exert potential skin care effects by regulating the skin microflora (specific applications need to comply with relevant industry standards).

3. Usage Instructions

3.1 Recommended Dosage

  • Adults: For daily maintenance of intestinal health, the recommended dosage is 2.5 – 5 g per day; for targeted bifidogenic or therapeutic effects, the dosage can be increased to 5 – 10 g per day. The upper practical limit is approximately 10 – 15 g per day, as excessive intake may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

  • Infants: Only use in infant formulas at manufacturer-specified levels; do not add additional GOS without professional guidance to avoid adverse reactions such as bloating.

  • Pregnant Women: It is generally safe to take no more than 4.5 g per day starting from the 25th week of gestation until delivery; avoid use during breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.

  • Elderly: The recommended dosage is the same as that for adults, and it is advisable to start with a low dosage and gradually increase to adapt to the body.

3.2 Usage Methods

  • Powder Form: It is the most common and economical form, with good stability. It can be directly taken with warm water (temperature ≤ 40℃ to avoid destroying its prebiotic activity), or added to milk, yogurt, porridge, juice, and other foods, stirring well until completely dissolved.

  • Syrup Form: Suitable for industrial production of formulas, beverages, and dairy products; after opening, it should be sealed and stored in a cool place, and used up as soon as possible to avoid deterioration.

  • Capsules/Tablets: Convenient for carrying and taking, usually taken with warm water before or after meals. Note that the GOS content per unit is often low, and multiple capsules/tablets may be needed to achieve the therapeutic dosage.

  • Industrial Application: When used as a food ingredient, it should be added according to the recommended dosage for different product types, and mixed evenly with other raw materials during the production process to ensure uniform distribution. For example, in dairy confectionery and cheese, the addition amount should comply with the authorized use scope and limits.

3.3 Precautions

  • Gastrointestinal Adaptation: GOS is fermented in the colon, so some people may experience transient gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, or mild diarrhea when first taking it or increasing the dosage. It is recommended to start with a low dosage (1 – 2 g per day) and gradually increase to the recommended dosage to improve tolerance.

  • Contraindications: People with autoimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) should avoid using GOS as a supplement, as it may activate the immune system and exacerbate symptoms.

  • Drug Interactions: Taking GOS together with immunosuppressants may reduce the effectiveness of the drugs; if you are taking such medications, consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and high temperature. Keep sealed to prevent moisture absorption, caking, or contamination. The shelf life varies according to the form and packaging, and it should be used within the validity period indicated on the product label.

  • Safety Note: The total daily intake of GOS from all food sources and supplements should not exceed 58 g, as excessive intake may exceed the adequate intake (AI) of dietary fiber and cause persistent gastrointestinal discomfort. However, there is no tolerable upper intake level for dietary fiber, and most symptoms are transient and will subside after reducing the dosage.

4. Safety and Regulatory Reminder

GOS has been authorized as a novel food in the EU and many other regions, and is recognized as safe under the recommended use conditions. In China, it is included in the list of food nutrition fortifiers, with a daily intake limit of 15 g for adults (based on a 60 kg body weight). When using GOS, whether as a consumer or a manufacturer, please comply with the relevant national and regional regulations and standards to ensure safe and rational use.
