Product Description

Product Uses and Instructions of Arabian Xylan

1. Product Overview

Arabian xylan (abbreviated as AX) is a complex polysaccharide that is an important component of hemicellulose in plant cell walls, mainly derived from grains such as wheat, barley, corn, rice, and by-products such as sugarcane bagasse. It is composed of a linear backbone of β-D-xylopyranose residues, linked to α-L-arabinofuranosyl substituents via C(O)-2, C(O)-3 or C(O)-2,3 bonds, and contains a certain amount of ferulic acid groups. Depending on its solubility, it can be divided into water-extractable arabinoxylan (WEAX) and water-unextractable arabinoxylan (WUAX). Its physicochemical properties and physiological functions are closely related to its molecular characteristics such as branching degree, relative molecular mass, and substituents, which endow it with a variety of biological activities and broad application prospects.

2. Product Uses

2.1 Food Industry

As a functional food ingredient and dietary fiber, Arabian xylan has been approved for use in food and dietary supplements in the United States, the European Union, Canada and other countries and regions, and has been recognized as a new food raw material in China after passing safety evaluation. Its specific applications include:

  • Grain products: It is used to improve the physicochemical properties of cereal products such as pasta, biscuits, cakes, bread and beer. Its structural properties (branching degree, solubility, molecular weight) are closely related to its functions in food systems, which can enhance the water-holding capacity of dough, improve gas retention, and optimize the texture and taste of products.

  • Functional food: It has antioxidant activity, prebiotic potential and immunomodulatory effect, and can be used in weight loss and blood sugar control foods. It helps slow down sugar absorption, maintain blood sugar levels, promote intestinal health by regulating the growth of probiotic flora, and assist in weight management.

  • Dietary supplements: It is made into powder or capsule forms and used as a dietary supplement to supplement dietary fiber, enhance immunity, and help maintain the balance of intestinal microecology. For example, some immune-enhancing supplements take Arabian xylan as the main component.

  • Food additives: High-molecular-weight Arabian xylan has high viscosity and gel-forming ability, and can be used as a food thickener, stabilizer and structuring agent; low-molecular-weight Arabian xylan has good solubility and can be used as a food ingredient and functional additive.

2.2 Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Industry

Due to its excellent biological activities and biocompatibility, Arabian xylan has broad application prospects in the pharmaceutical field:

  • Immunomodulation: It can induce dendritic cells to produce the immunomodulatory cytokine interleukin-10, enhance the activity of natural killer cells, thereby inhibiting the growth of tumor cells, and is used in the research and development of immunomodulatory drugs and anti-tumor auxiliary drugs.

  • Drug carrier: It can be made into pH-responsive microgels, microspheres and other carriers for targeted delivery of drugs (such as insulin, bovine serum albumin), improving the bioavailability of drugs and realizing colon-specific drug delivery.

  • Healthcare products: It is used in the development of healthcare products for intestinal health, blood sugar regulation and immune enhancement, helping to improve human health by exerting its prebiotic, antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.

2.3 Other Industrial Fields

  • Packaging industry: It can be mixed with nanocellulose, feruloylated compounds and other materials to prepare antioxidant and antimicrobial active packaging films, which are used in food packaging to extend the shelf life of products.

  • Bioenergy field: It can be converted into clean energy, and the residue after extraction can be further used to produce fuel ethanol and other products, realizing the high-value utilization of resources.

  • Paper industry: It can be used as an additive in papermaking to improve the strength and performance of paper products (relevant research and application are in continuous development).

3. Usage Instructions

3.1 Recommended Dosage

  • Food and dietary supplements: The recommended daily intake is ≤15 grams (based on dry basis) for food raw materials; for dietary supplements, the recommended dosage ranges from 500 mg to 3,000 mg per day, which can be adjusted according to product concentration and individual health needs. A starting dose of 2-3 grams per day is recommended, and it can be gradually increased to up to 10 grams if well tolerated. Studies have shown that up to 30 grams per day is generally tolerable, but excessive intake may cause mild digestive discomfort.

  • Pharmaceutical and healthcare products: The dosage shall be strictly followed in accordance with the product manual or the guidance of doctors and pharmacists, as it varies according to specific health conditions and product specifications.

  • Industrial use: The dosage shall be adjusted according to specific application scenarios, product requirements and process parameters, and it is recommended to conduct pre-experiments to determine the optimal dosage.

3.2 Usage Methods

  • Powder form: It can be directly added to food raw materials (such as flour, milk, beverages) and mixed evenly; for dietary supplements, it can be dissolved in warm water, milk, fruit juice and other liquids for consumption, or mixed with yogurt, porridge and other foods. It is recommended to stir while adding to avoid agglomeration.

  • Capsule/tablet form: Take it with warm water according to the recommended dosage, and it is advisable to take it after meals to reduce possible digestive discomfort.

  • Industrial application: According to the specific process requirements, it can be dissolved, mixed or compounded with other materials, and the operation shall be carried out in accordance with relevant industrial operating specifications.

3.3 Precautions

  • Dosage control: It shall be used within the recommended dosage range. Excessive intake may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating and diarrhea.

  • Unsuitable groups: Due to insufficient safety data in infants, pregnant women and lactating women, these groups are not suitable for consumption, and the product label and manual shall clearly mark the unsuitable groups and intake limits.

  • Storage conditions: Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, avoid direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity, and prevent moisture absorption, agglomeration and deterioration. Keep it out of the reach of children.

  • Compatibility: It has good compatibility with most food ingredients, pharmaceutical excipients and industrial materials, but it is not recommended to mix it with strong acids, strong alkalis and oxidants to avoid affecting its performance.

  • Medical guidance: For people with chronic diseases (such as diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases) and those taking other drugs for a long time, it is recommended to consult doctors or pharmacists before use.

  • Solubility tips: For water-unextractable Arabian xylan, appropriate processing (such as heating, stirring) can be carried out according to the application needs to improve its dispersion and functional performance in the system.

4. Notes

The product performance is closely related to its source, molecular weight, branching degree and other factors. It is recommended to select the appropriate type and specification according to the specific application scenario.
